Rescue Flight Update: Nearly 4,000 Lives Moved Toward a Brighter Future

As summer begins, our team at Dog Is My CoPilot continues to fly at full capacity, transporting shelter pets from overcrowded communities to areas where loving families are waiting to adopt.

So far in 2026, we have transported over 4,000 dogs and cats to safety. Nearly every flight is full, averaging approximately 75 animals on board. Behind those numbers are thousands of individual stories, countless hours of coordination, and an incredible network of shelter and rescue partners working together to save lives.

Meet John Wayne: Our 47,000th Passenger

One of our favorite stories this month is that of John Wayne, our 47,000th passenger. John Wayne is an 83-pound, 8-year-old silver Labrador Retriever from Pecos, Texas.

John Wayne’s story began long before he boarded our aircraft.

According to local animal control officers, he had been spotted wandering through town multiple times but repeatedly avoided capture. Eventually, the local police chief was able to lure him into her garage, allowing animal control officers to safely bring him in.

Once in care at Austin Pets Alive!, it became clear that John Wayne needed significant medical attention. He was suffering from a severe chemical burn on his tongue as well as a skin infection. After weeks of treatment, medications, vaccinations, and a neuter procedure, he finally received a clean bill of health.

Shortly after arriving at Fetching Tails in Illinois, we shared John’s story on social media. Within just a few weeks, he was adopted by a family who absolutely adores him. Stories like John’s remind us why transport matters. Sometimes the only thing standing between a wonderful dog and a loving home is access to a community where adopters are waiting.

“I first saw Scout (FKA John Wayne & Alf) on the Dog Is My Co-Pilot Facebook page, and his sweet face immediately stole my heart. I read about his journey from the streets of Pecos, TX, to the Pecos Animal Shelter, and then ithrough Dog Is My Co-Pilot, to safety with Fetching Tails Rescue in the Chicago suburbs. He was near me! As a senior dog who had already been through so much, he still deserved comfort, stability, and love. I wasn’t just looking for a dog—I wanted to give the right one a second chance, and Scout felt like exactly that. He is now adjusting beautifully—enjoying twice-daily walks, a big comfortable bed, new backyard smells, neighborhood dog friends, learning to play with toys, and soaking up all the love he can get.”

A Lifeline for Pets in Need

Our partners at Austin Pets Alive! have been working tirelessly to assist with a large Shih Tzu hoarding case involving dozens of dogs. Over the past several months, many of these dogs have traveled aboard Dog Is My CoPilot flights as part of a coordinated effort to move animals into shelters and rescue organizations with available space and resources.

Cases like these highlight the importance of a strong national transport network. When shelters become overwhelmed, whether due to hoarding cases, natural disasters, or ongoing capacity challenges, transportation creates immediate relief while giving animals access to new opportunities.

Why We Fly

People often ask how Dog Is My CoPilot can have such a significant impact with a relatively small team. The answer is simple: collaboration and efficiency.

A single Dog Is My CoPilot rescue flight has an average of 75 shelter pets at one time, creating immediate lifesaving impact for both animals and shelters. Shelters in overcrowded communities often have more adoptable pets than local families can accommodate. Meanwhile, shelters and rescue organizations in other regions have waiting adopters but not enough available pets.

Our role is to bridge that gap.

Using our fleet of three aircraft, we transport dogs and cats from communities where shelter populations exceed adoption demand to areas where families are actively looking to adopt. Every transport opens kennel space, reduces overcrowding, and gives more animals a chance to receive care and find homes.

A View From the Right Seat

This month, we were also excited to welcome a ride-along guest from IPAW Rescue Network on a transport mission originating in El Paso, Texas, with stops in Wyoming, Oregon, and Washington. Experiencing a rescue flight firsthand offers a unique perspective on the scale and efficiency of transport. What many people don’t see is the deep trust and coordination that develops between organizations working together month after month, year after year.

Many of our shelter and rescue partners coordinate transports every three to four weeks. These long-standing relationships create efficiencies that allow us to move large numbers of animals safely and effectively while ensuring every pet receives the care and attention they deserve throughout their journey.

The result is a transportation network capable of saving thousands of lives each year.
